Illustrating Oníkòyí, the progenitor of the Ìkòyí people
When you hear the name Ìkòyí or someone mentions it, any true son or daughter of Yorùbáland would naturally ask, “Which Ìkòyí?” This is because there are at least five or six places named Ìkòyí in Yorùbáland. There is Ìkòyí in Lagos, Kwara, Ògùn, Ìkòyí in Osun, Ọ̀yọ́ and Ìkòyí in Benin Republic. Despite these many Ìkòyís, they all trace their origins to one ancestor—the mighty warrior known as Oníkòyí.
Oníkòyí: The Fearless Warrior
Oníkòyí was a warrior without equal. There was no land he did not fight in. He was a fearless and gallant fighter, a true warlord. In his time, he went to battle against Alárá and emerged victorious. He fought Ajerò and conquered. Even Ọwáràngún-aga, another mighty ruler, was not spared from Oníkòyí’s warpath. Oníkòyí fought countless wars on behalf of the Aláàfin of Oyo, and in every single one, he was triumphant.
As time passed, Oníkòyí grew old and eventually joined his ancestors, but the fire of war never left his household. The blood of battle coursed through the veins of his descendants. As the proverb says, “If the corn gives birth, it births a strong stalk; if the parrot hatches, it hatches a chatterbox.”
The children of Oníkòyí, including their descendants far and wide, inherited his warrior spirit. They fought battles across the land, and that is why today, the lineage of Oníkòyí has spread far and wide. According to oral historians, many of the old Ìkòyí settlements have disappeared, but their legacy lives on.
Oníkòyí and the Aláàfin of Ọ̀yọ́
Oníkòyí was not just a warrior he became the General of the Aláàfin’s guards. But how did he rise to such an esteemed position? One fateful day, Oníkòyí was traveling through a forest near the city of Ọ̀yọ́. As he walked, he encountered a noble chief of the Aláàfin. The moment the chief set eyes on Oníkòyí, he knew he was in the presence of a powerful man. Without hesitation, the chief invited Oníkòyí to the Aláàfin’s palace.
The Aláàfin, recognizing the greatness before him, welcomed Oníkòyí as a guest. He provided him with a place to rest and even ordered that he be given a covering cloth for warmth. The next day, the king sent for Oníkòyí, and during their meeting, the Aláàfin made an offer that would change Oníkòyí’s destiny.
He did not just ask Oníkòyí to stay in the kingdom he invited him to live permanently within the palace. But the offer went further than that. The Aláàfin declared that wherever he went, Oníkòyí must accompany him. He wanted Oníkòyí to be his commander-in-chief, the leader of his guards.
And so, Oníkòyí became the Olórí Ẹ̀ṣọ́, the supreme guard’s leader of Oyo. From that day forward, the title became a hereditary one, passed down through generations of Oníkòyí’s lineage. But even those who did not inherit the title never abandoned their warrior ways they continued fighting across the land, their bravery immortalized in their praise poetry (oríkì).

Ọmọ atilé dira ogun
Ọmọ Agbọ́jọ́ ogun gba jó
Ẹ̀ṣọ́ ló lógún
Ẹ̀ṣọ́ ló lógún

Ẹ̀ṣọ́ ló lógún
Àní ṣé á jọ lọ

Translations:
Ìkòyí, the guard!
Born into a lineage where battle is a way of life.
Descendants of those who do not merely watch wars from afar but dance boldly in their midst.
For the people of Ìkòyí, war is not just an event; it is a tradition.
War is their birthright.
They do not retreat, nor do they cower.
War is their destiny.
And when the drums of battle sound,
There is only one path to march forward together!
To march forward together!
If war comes knocking at the door,
They will rise as one, never turning back!
Thus, the name Oníkòyí became synonymous with courage, strength, and the art of war. His story remains one of the most celebrated warrior legacies in Yorùbá history.
